If your child is born in Denmark and the mother does not have a Danish address, there are different scenarios effecting the process of how your child is birth registered in the CPR Register, e.g., whether the father/co-mother has an address in Denmark, whether you are married or whether the mother or father/co-mother has a Danish Civil Registration Number (CPR-nr). Please find your appropriate scenario in the following and read further.
When the birth is registered you can ask for a Certificate of Personal Data ("Personattest", documentation for the birth) that is issued by the registrar.

If the mother has a Danish Civil Registration Number (CPR number)
If the mother has a Danish CPR number, the birth is registered by the parish close to the hospital where the birth took place. If the birth took place in the Southern part of Jutland the birth is registered by the municipality.
Your child will be given a Danish CPR number at the hospital and the mother will receive a letter of information in her Digital Post that guides her to the registration process of paternity/co-motherhood and naming. Find the letter at the following link.
> Read about the 'Letter of information'
If the mother is married
If the mother is married and the marriage is registered in the CPR Register, the father/co-mother is automatically registered as father/co-mother with joint custody.
If your marriage is not registered in the Danish CPR Register, you must contact Folkeregistret at the municipality (Citizens Service Center). Remember to bring your Marriage Certificate.
If the mother is unmarried/divorced
If the mother is unmarried and the father/co-mother has a Danish CPR number, you can complete the "Declaration for Care and Parental Responsibility" if you wish to have joint parental custody. You can do this online with MitID on borger.dk or on paper. Please contact the parish where the birth is registered after you have completed the declaration.
> Complete the 'Declaration for Care and Parental Responsibility' online on borger.dk
> Download the 'Declaration for Care and Parental Responsibility' on paper (pdf.) (in Danish only)
If the mother is unmarried and the father/co-mother does not have a Danish CPR number – and you wish to have joint parental custody, you can complete a Declaration for Care and parental Responsibility on paper by attending the parish where your child was birth registered. Please bring Photo ID e.g., Passport.
If the parish does not receive the declaration within 28 days after your child is born the processing of paternity/co-motherhood will take place by the Agency of Family Law.

If the mother does not have a Danish CPR number
If the mother does not have a Danish CPR number, the birth is registered by the parish where the child is born. If the birth took place in the Southern part of Jutland the birth will be registered by the municipality.
The mother will not receive the letter of information that normally informs you of the further process of paternity/co-motherhood and naming, however you can find the letter below.
> Read more about the 'Letter of information'
To register the birth the mother will be given a CPR number (without an attached address). In order to make this happen the mother must deliver a Photo ID (certificate) together with other documentation e.g., Passport, documentation of asylum etc.
The CPR number will be made by specialists within given time.
If the mother is married
If the mother is married the spouse will automatically be registered as father/co-mother with joint custody at the time of birth. It is however required to bring documentation on your marriage.
If your marriage is not registered in the CPR Register, you must contact Folkeregistret (Citizens Service Center).
Please note: If the father/co-mother does not have a CPR number at the time of birth but he/she gets a number later on, you must contact the parish where the birth is registered to update the paternity/co-motherhood in the CPR Register.
> Find your parish of birth registration (search on the address of the hospital)
If the mother is unmarried/divorced etc.
If the mother is unmarried and the father/co-mother has a Danish CPR number, you can complete the "Declaration for Care and Parental Responsibility" to get joint parental custody. You can complete the declaration on paper. Please contact the parish where your child was birth registered when it is completed.
If the mother is unmarried and the father/co-mother does NOT have a CPR number, he/she will be given a Danish CPR number. The CPR number will be given by specialists within given time. If you need joint parental custody, you can complete the "Declaration for Care and Parental Responsibility" on paper.
> Download the 'Declaration for Care and Parental Responsibility' on paper (pdf.) (in Danish only)
> Find your parish of birth registration (search on the address of the hospital)
Naming
After birth registration the next step will be to apply for a name for your child. Since your child does not have an address in Denmark, you can apply in the same parish where your child was registered at birth. If your child was born in the South of Jutland, it is the municipality who will process your application.
